About This Page

This safety guidance is provided in compliance with the UK General Product Safety Regulations 2005 (GPSR) and the General Safety and Performance Requirements (GSPR). It applies to all physical products sold by The Bag Makers Sew-Ciety, including:

  • Bag making hardware (e.g. D-rings, swivel hooks, rivets, zip pulls)

  • Nylon continuous zip tape and zipper sliders

  • Associated sewing notions and components

Our products are intended for use by adult crafters, hobbyists, and makers, and are not suitable for use in children’s products or safety-critical items.

Hazard Description Safety Measures

Choking Hazard:

Small parts such as rivets, D-rings, and zip pulls may pose a serious choking risk Keep all small components away from children and pets. Store in sealed containers. Work in a secure, supervised space

Sharp Edges or Points Metal prongs or damaged parts may cause cuts or puncture wounds Use proper tools for assembly. Inspect items before use. Wear gloves where appropriate

Nickel Sensitivity

Some items may contain nickel, which can cause allergic skin reactions in sensitive individuals Avoid prolonged contact with skin if you have a known nickel allergy. Products are not certified nickel-free unless stated

Functional Failure

If hardware is attached incorrectly or used for purposes it’s not designed for, failure may occur Choose hardware appropriate for your project. Reinforce with stitching or rivets as needed. Test for durability

Unsuitable for Children These products are not safety tested for children or infant products Do not use in toys, baby bags, teething rings, or similar items intended for young children

Packaging Risk

Items may be supplied in plastic bags or wrap, which pose a suffocation risk Keep all packaging away from babies and young children. Dispose of responsibly after opening

Product Safety Guidance – Nylon Continuous Zip Tape

Identified Hazards and Recommendations

Hazard Description Safety Measures

Sharp Tape Edges

The raw edges of cut zip tape can fray and may cause minor abrasions Use sharp scissors or rotary cutters for clean cuts. Trim frayed edges. Use caution when handling

Choking Risk

Detached zipper teeth or tape fragments may pose a choking hazard Keep all small parts and offcuts away from children and animals. Dispose of fragments immediately

Melting or Burns Nylon is a thermoplastic and will melt when exposed to high heat Use a press cloth when ironing. Do not expose to open flame or very hot irons. Avoid high heat settings

Fumes from Melting

Melting or burning nylon can release harmful fumes Work in a well-ventilated area. Do not use heat sources beyond standard sewing applications

Sewing Machine Risks

Frayed tape or improper feeding can cause machine jams or broken needles Trim all raw edges. Test with scrap tape first. Use appropriate needles and avoid pulling the tape

Allergic Reaction

Although rare, some people may react to nylon or synthetic dyes If irritation occurs, stop use and wash the affected area. Seek medical advice if needed

Colour Transfer

Certain dyes may transfer to adjacent fabrics, especially in high heat or moisture Always test on a small scrap of fabric. Avoid use on very light or delicate materials without pretesting

Additional Use and Handling Guidelines

  • Use only compatible zipper sliders (e.g. #3 or #5) with the matching coil size

  • Insert sliders carefully using a zipper jig or manual alignment

  • Secure raw ends with stitching, zipper stops, or by incorporating into seams

  • Store unused tape in a dry, cool location out of direct sunlight

Children’s Product Warning

None of our products are tested, certified, or intended for use in children’s toys, clothing, or accessories. Products sold by The Bag Makers Sew-Ciety:

  • Are not suitable for use by or around children under 3 years old. Children under the age of 12 should be supervised when using hardware and zipper tape.

  • Must not be used in baby items or any product likely to be mouthed or chewed

  • Should be stored safely away from children at all times

Prohibited Uses

Products sold by The Bag Makers Sew-Ciety must not be used in:

  • Toys or products intended for children under 14 years old

  • Load-bearing or weight-critical applications (e.g. climbing gear, harnesses, safety equipment)

  • Food-contact products

  • Medical or personal protective equipment

  • Environments exposed to open flames or high heat

  • Products that require CE or UKCA certification, unless explicitly stated

  • Products requiring certified hypoallergenic materials

Packaging Notice

Some items are packaged in plastic bags, bubble wrap, or shrink-wrap to protect them during shipping. To ensure safety:

  • Keep all packaging materials out of reach of children and pets

  • Do not reuse packaging for unintended purposes

  • Dispose of responsibly in accordance with local waste guidelines

Storage and Disposal

  • Store all products in a dry, well-ventilated environment away from direct heat

  • Keep sharp items in containers or storage cases to prevent injury

  • Dispose of hardware scraps and nylon fragments responsibly, in closed bins

  • Recycle packaging where possible, unless contaminated
