The Bag Makers Sew-Ciety YouTube Channel

I still remember the day I stumbled across bag making on YouTube. I was just browsing, looking for something creative to do, when I found a video on the NCW (Necessary Clutch Wallet) by one of my favourite YouTubers — Sian from Kittenish Behaviour. That was it. I was down the rabbit hole, and I’ve never looked back.

That one video led me to discover a whole world of talented, passionate bag makers sharing their skills and stories online. Over time, I found Kassiah of SiahSwag, Lauren of SewWhat Ever, Brandy from Beans Bags and Handicrafts Co., Nicole of OK Sew, Barb of Jeannie Designs, and of course, my lovely friend Emma of Studio 7t7 — all of whom have inspired me in different ways.

🎥 Why YouTube Works for Me

I’m a visual learner, so watching tutorials and sew-alongs really helps me absorb new techniques and get to grips with unfamiliar patterns. I especially love when pattern designers release their own videos, but I also find huge value in watching how other makers do things. Everyone has their own approach, and I always seem to pick up handy little tips and tricks by seeing different methods.

One thing I try to do in my own videos is leave in my mistakes in (unless they’re absolute disasters!). I think mistakes are brilliant teaching tools. We all make them — and learning how to fix things when they go wrong is just as important as getting it right the first time. I really normalising mistakes is important no one is perfect and one thing I feel strongly about on my channel is being real.

📹 Starting My Own YouTube Channel

Eventually, I decided to bite the bullet and start my own YouTube channel. Honestly? It pushed me right out of my comfort zone. But it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made. That one step led me to create The Bag Makers Sew-Ciety Club, build a community I absolutely love, and open doors I never even knew were there.

YouTube isn’t just a platform — it’s a community. It connects people across the world through a shared love of creating. I’ve made amazing friendships and found so much support from other creators and makers.

🧠 My Top Tip for Visual Learners

If you’re like me and learn best by watching, here’s something that works really well:

1. When you’re about to make a new bag pattern, find a sew-along or tutorial from a maker you enjoy.

2. Watch it all the way through before you start sewing or even cutting out. Take notes on any tricky bits or changes you’d like to make. You never know what tips you will pick up before you even make a start.

3. When you're ready to sew, rewatch it step-by-step as you go. Pause and rewind at key points. Go at your own pace — that’s the beauty of it!
